PCM girls cruise past South Hamilton

JEWELL — The Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team got back on the winning track Tuesday, returning from the holiday break with a 58-18 win over South Hamilton during Heart of Iowa Conference play.

The Mustangs led 17-6 after one quarter and pushed their advantage to 38-10 at halftime. PCM won the second half 20-8, including 7-0 in the fourth.

Freshman Regan Freland led PCM (7-2 overall, 6-1 in the HOIC) with 15 points, while senior Kayla Jennings scored 13.

Senior Katie Vande Wall put in nine, senior Kaylee Townsend chipped in eight, senior Rachel Stafford scored six and senior Lexi Timmins collected five points.

Sophomore Morgan Uhlenhopp also scored her first two points of the season.

PCM hosts North Polk in a HOIC varsity doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. Friday in Monroe.

South Hamilton dropped to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the HOIC after the loss.

Mustang junior Jackson Thomas matched Truman State recruit Collin Hill point for point in the first three quarters of PCM’s HOIC battle with the undefeated Hawks on Tuesday.

Thomas scored 24 points in the game, but none of them came in the fourth quarter.

Hill poured in 30 in the game, and 10 of those came in the fourth when South Hamilton rallied for the win.

The 2A No. 9 Hawks (7-0, 6-0) outscored PCM 18-8 in the fourth quarter to stay unbeaten. PCM led 33-28 at halftime.

Thomas scored 11 in the first quarter to give PCM an early lead.

The Mustangs (4-3, 4-2) led by three entering the fourth quarter.

Junior Elijah Sperfslage scored nine points and dished out four assists, senior Mark Bruxvoort scored nine points and sophomore Andrew Van Ryswyk added eight points and grabbed six boards. Sophomore Reed Worth dished out five assists.
