An altercation between a Newton couple turned violent when one man was reportedly injured from stab wounds allegedly inflicted by his wife at their residence.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was called at 5:14 p.m. Dec. 30 in reference to a stabbing in the 2300 block of East 19th Street North.

According to authorities, after David M. Stenson, 53, had been allegedly stabbed by his wife, Karen L. Stenson, 57, was also reportedly making threats to stab her husband’s dog.

When the deputy arrived, David was outside of the residence, and Karen Stenson had reportedly attempted to lock herself inside the home.

David Stenson told the deputy his wife had started a verbal argument over him not being home, and she demanded to know where he was. When he refused to tell her where he had been, she allegedly grabbed his throat, and they started to push and shove each other.

David Stenson said Karen Stenson then grabbed a knife and proceeded to stab him. He told law enforcement that all actions done by him were in effort to defend himself.

Karen Stenson told the deputy she got scared when David grabbed her by the neck and that is why she grabbed a dagger that was hanging on the wall. She also told the deputy she used the dagger to stab her husband twice.

Both were arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
