Ella Jolene Savage, 73, of Newton, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at her home in McCann Village. A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials in Ella’s name may be left at the funeral home.

Ella, the daughter of Benny and Martha (Brue) Illingworth, was born Aug. 18, 1943, in Newton. Growing up she enjoyed summer trips to her aunt and uncle’s dairy farm in Wisconsin. Ella was united in marriage with Leonard D. Savage Dec. 26, 1959, in Newton, where they made their home. She was a fabulous baker and cook and had worked at the Hy-Vee Deli, Midtown Café and Park Centre, where she retired from in 2005. Ella was proud of her Norwegian heritage and liked to make authentic Norwegian dishes along with her famous pies. She and Leonard also enjoyed going to dances at the Moose and the VFW. They also loved taking trips to the Amanas with the grandkids each year.

Ella is survived by her two sons, Rodney Savage of Newton and Regan Savage of Newton; grandchildren, Patti (Justin) Doran of Newton, R. Matthew Savage of Newton, Nathan (Sarina) Savage of Newton, Dylan (Katie) Savage of Grinnell, Nicole Savage of Newton, Dalton Jon Savage of Mitchellville, and Rachel Savage of Mitchellville; her great-grandchildren, Kylie and Kortney Doran, Ellexa, Olivia and Abbie Savage, Layne and Skyler Savage, Michael Savage and Layla Purvis, Layden Frisch and Bladen Berry; brothers, Fred (MaryLou) Illingworth of Russell and Gregory (Karen) Illingworth of Newton; sister-in-law, Colleen Illingworth of Newton; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard Savage; son, Vincent; daughter, Renae; two brothers, John and Bill Illingworth; and two sisters, Betty Bowen and Marlene in infancy.
