County officials sworn into office

A packed room was on hand to welcome new Jasper County Supervisor Doug Cupples and congratulate incumbents auditor Dennis Parrott and sheriff John Halferty on Tuesday.

The three elected officials were sworn in at the supervisors’ board meeting along with naming the board chair and setting official meeting times.

“I am really excited — you can ask my family,” Cupples said. “I’m very excited to work with the people here. I have heard so many good things.”

Parrott also thanked those who came to the meeting and gave the majority of the credit for the work done in the auditor’s office to his staff.

“My success is because of my staff,” Parrott said. “That is the reason that the auditor’s office has success. We’re looking forward to a good four years with a lot of things to do and great people to work with.”

Halferty said a few words following his swearing in ceremony.

“My faith in God and my family are first and they get me through this difficult job at times but I am also very blessed,” Halferty said. “We have a great team and we’ve made some great progress in last eight to 10 years, all of the elected officials, and they county is very fortunate to have the team they have and I am just blessed to be a part of it.”

The board appointed supervisor Joe Brock to serve as chair and supervisor Denny Carpenter to fill the vice chair position. A resolution was also passed establishing the official meeting time of the board at 9:30 a.m. the first four Tuesdays in a month.

The Newton Daily News, Jasper County Tribune and Hometown Press were also approved as official newspapers for the board.

A reception was held following the meeting to congratulate the newly sworn in officials.
