Newton Christian School advances to Lego League state competition

Newton Christian School First Lego League team advances to state competition at Iowa State University in January after securing a win at the regional competition in Ottumwa on Dec. 3. The team of nine students was awarded the first-place trophy for robot design.

This year’s FLL theme is Animal Allies. The team devised strategies to build, test and program an autonomous robot using Lego Mindstorms to solve a set of missions in the robot game. The group also chose to solve a real-world problem using research and ideas to help bats in the wild. Throughout the whole experience, the team developed solid teamwork and relational skills and exemplified First Lego League’s signature set of core values.

The team is coached by Lynne Garton and Sara Koon, who voiced their pleasure in seeing the team pull together this year to accomplish the award recognition and distinction of a berth at state finals.
