Mid-Iowa Motor Sports fire shows more than $175,000 loss

A morning fire at a Newton motorsports repair shop Tuesday resulted in a total loss for the business’s shop.

The Newton, Baxter and Colfax Fire Departments responded to a building fire at Mid-Iowa Motor Sports around 8 a.m. at 6388 Highway 14 N. after someone driving by on the highway called 911.

The shop, owned by Todd Birkenholtz, was used to repair ATVs and motorcycles and was fully engulfed with smoke. It was opened in 2002.

Newton Fire Marshall Mike Knoll said the total amount in damage is believed to be between $175,000 and $200,000.

Knoll said it took area fire departments two and a half hours to extinguish the fire.

Though the cause was undetermined as of Tuesday, Knoll said the fire is believed to have started inside the building.

No one was inside the building at the time and no injuries were reported.
