Two similar sized swimming teams squared off on Thursday at Newton’s YMCA. NCMP’s Cardinals hosted the Boone Toreadors in a dual, and both teams number around 20 swimmers.

The Toreadors had a little more depth than the Cardinals, winning the varsity dual, 108-60.

With head coach Sarah Patterson out with illness, NCMP assistant coach Quin Knepper had the Cardinals lined up for the events.

“Two smaller teams tonight, and we competed the whole time,” Knepper said. “We’re in the midst of four meets in a five-day stretch, and I saw evidence of it, but the guys kept competing. They are tired, but that’s swimming and why we practice.”

NCMP won four events, including a close finish in the 200-meter freestyle relay. The foursome of Clay Trotter, Mason Lee, Logan Heisdorffer and Caleb Gaylor combined for a winning time of 1 minute, 48.32 seconds. Boone’s relay finished in 1:50.91.

“I thought our team did really well tonight,” Gaylor said. “Our relays are going well this season. We have some really solid relays.”

Gaylor claimed the win in the 200 individual medley in a battle in the water against Boone’s Cole Harper. Gaylor out touched Harper for the win in 2:24.88 to 2:25.19. NCMP’s Carter Briggs was fifth in 2:42.49 and Izaak Miller took sixth in 3:17.77.

Gaylor made the final turn in the 100 freestyle and took the lead against Boone’s Reece Powell, winning in 58.32 seconds to Powell’s 1:01.60. Heisdorffer was fourth in 1:04.02 and Clay Meyer took fifth in 1:11.44 for NCMP.

“I dropped time in two of my races this week. I got the times I wanted to get,” Gaylor said.

Adam Hunter made it two in a row for the Cardinals in the 400 freestyle race. Hunter won at home on Tuesday then shaved off almost three seconds from his winning time on Thursday. Hunter took first against Boone in 4:51.35.

The Cardinals started off with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay with the foursome of Trotter, Briggs, Gaylor and Heisdorffer in 2:04.43. The NCMP team of Meyer, Izaak Miller, Mason Lee and Logan Zaabel finished fourth in 2:29.19.

Hunter placed second in the 200 freestyle in 2:19.50 and Jacob Nedder finished fifth in 2:32.48. In the 50 freestyle, Trotter got nipped at the end by Boone’s Powell, 26.53 seconds to 26.61 seconds. Heisdorffer was fourth in 28.46 and Lee was fifth in 29.64 seconds.

Lee turned in a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:22.89. Nedder took third in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.76 while Meyer finished fifth in 1:24.61 and Parker Sherwood was sixth in 1:52.69. Briggs was third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.44 and Miller was fifth in 1:25.85.

NCMP’s 400 freestyle relay team of Trotter, Nedder, Meyer and Hunter placed third in 4:32.60. The foursome of Nedder, Zaabel, Miller and Briggs took fourth in the 200 freestyle relay race.

“I liked our relays tonight. We were a little slow on the back end, but we kept our pace,” Knepper said. “I’m looking for our guys to go to Marshalltown on Saturday and compete well.”

In the junior varsity races, Grant Hammond won the 100 breaststroke for NCMP in 1:43.76. The foursome of Joe Busch, Hamand, Spencer Elbert and Sherwood took second in the 200 freestyle relay in 2:29.36. The same team was third in the 200 medley relay in 3:07.84.

Busch touched third in the 50 freestyle in 40.77 seconds followed by Sherwood in fourth in 41.41. Elbert was sixth in 43.64 seconds.

Zaabel led a 3-4-5 finish for the Cardinals in the junior varsity 100 freestyle in 1:21.21. Hamand was fourth in 1:22.59 and Busch was fifth in 1:36.44.

NCMP competes in the Marshalltown Invitational, which begins at noon, on Saturday.
