Montezuma sweeps Tigerhawks

MONTEZUMA — The Montezuma basketball teams jumped out to early leads against Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday and cruised to easy home victories during South Iowa Cedar League action.

The Class 2A No. 14 Bravettes, who led 23-7 after one quarter and 44-13 at halftime, got 21 points apiece from junior Breck Goodman and freshman Shateah Wetering during a 71-43 victory, while the Montezuma boys basketball team downed Colfax-Mingo 80-38.

Junior McKeely Tjaden scored 14 points for Colfax-Mingo, which dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the SICL. Sophomore Payton Rhone added a pair of 3-pointers and 12 points, while senior Dakota Hostetter scored seven points, grabbed 10 rebounds and finished with six steals.

The Montezuma boys led Colfax-Mingo 29-11 after one quarter. The Braves outscored the Tigerhawks (1-3, 1-2) 51-27 the rest of the way.

Dakota Strong led the Braves (3-1, 3-0) with 23 points. He made five of Montezuma’s 12 3-pointers. Logan Price chipped in 17 points in the win.
