VICTOR — Lynnville-Sully’s girls and boys stayed perfect for the 2016-17 basketball season with a sweep of South Iowa Cedar League conference games against host HLV on Tuesday.
The Hawk girls posted a 56-21 win over the HLV Warrior girls to improve to 5-0. The Class 1A fourth-ranked Lynnville-Sully’s boys dominated the first half, leading 40-9, on their way to a 70-23 victory over the Warriors to go to 4-0.
“In the first half, we were a little slow. We didn’t have the energy we needed on defense and were standing too much on offense,” Lynnville-Sully girls’ head coach Jerry Hulsing said.
The Hawk girls had a 13-4 lead after one quarter of play and were up 21-9 at halftime. In the third quarter, the switch was on full force as Lynnville-Sully outscored HLV, 19-2. The Hawks finished the game on a 16-10 run the fourth period.
“We came out with a lot better energy in the second half, forcing several turnovers which led to some easy baskets. We had better ball movement and attacked the rim better,” Hulsing said.
The Hawk girls shot 44 percent, 20-of-45, from the field while holding the Warrior girls to 14 percent, 6-of-41, from the field. Lynnville-Sully cashed in on 14-of-20 free throw attempts. HLV was 6-of-22 at the free-throw line.
Jelissa Rozendaal paced the Hawk girls with 16 points and eight rebounds. Carson Fisk fired in 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds, made four steals and handed out four assists. Mariah Vos scored eight points.
Brenna Lanser tossed in seven points, dished out five assists, pulled down seven rebounds and had three steals. Scoring four points apiece were Christine Nikkel and Camryn Russell. Jataya Meyer scored two points.
Haley Coats hit three 3-pointers for the Warrior girls, leading them with 11 points. The Warriors had 25 turnovers.
“We were able to create 24 turnovers, which led to some easy baskets,” Lynnville-Sully boys’ head coach Nick Harthoorn said as the Hawk boys powered past the Warriors.
Up 21-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Hawks’ defensive play held the Warriors to one point in the second period. Lynnville-Sully added 19 points to the scoreboard for its 40-9 halftime lead.
The Hawks held a 19-10 scoring edge in the third quarter and finished the game on an 11-4 run in the final eight minutes.
Eleven players saw action for the Hawks, and all 11 scored. Lynnville-Sully shot 54 percent, 27-of-50, from the field and downed 9-of-15 free throw attempts.
“It was good to see everyone get into the scoring column for the Hawks. Hopefully we can continue to work hard in practice and keep making strides in the right direction,” Harthoorn said.
Tanner Foster led the way for Lynnville-Sully with 13 points and made four steals. Rylan James scored 12 points and collected six rebounds. Tyler Van Zante had nine points.
Jesse Van Wyk had eight points and pulled eight of the team’s 32 rebounds. He also had five assists. Brevin Hansen dished out four assists and scored seven points.
John Trettin and Grant Wehrle each had five points and Drake Ehresman scored four points. Tyson Vander Linden had three points while Ryan Hofer and Kemper Lukehart had two points each.
HLV’s boys shot a cool 28 percent, 10-of-36, from the field and hit 2-of-8 free throw tries. They had 19 rebounds.
Ben Toyne was the Warriors’ leading scorer with six points. Mitch Thys and Kody Timm each had five points each.
On Friday, Lynnville-Sully hosts Montezuma in conference play at Sully. The Hawk girls play at 6 p.m. against the Class 2A No. 14 Bravettes. The No. 4 ranked Hawk boys have a showdown with the No. 5 ranked Montezuma boys at 7:30 p.m.
