George Thompson

George Gilbert Thompson, the son of Lewis Franklin and Leona Alice (Marshall) Thompson, was born Feb. 23, 1922, in rural Clark County. He attended schools in Osceola. On Oct. 21, 1942, George was united in marriage with Wilma J. Benson in Bethany, Mo. He ran a rendering truck in the Jasper County area until 1967. In 1968, George went to work for Farm Service driving a truck selling fuel oil, diesel oil and gasoline. He worked for Farm Service until 1987, then went to work for Sully Co-op. He retired from the Co-op in 2007.

George died Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. He was 94 years old. George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma, in June 1993;  his brothers, Milton, Robert, Lewis, Charles, Walter, Howard and Ralph; and his sister, Leona.

Those left to honor George’s memory include his children, Patricia (George) Deishl of Pahrump, Nev., Tom (Ilene) Thompson of Helena, Mont., and Kay (Rick) Vander Werf of Monroe; his grandchildren, Shawn Duggins, Shannon (Mechelle) Flory, Amy Thompson, Alicia Thompson, Matthew (Erin) Vander Werf and Morgan (Tony) DeRaad; his great-grandchildren, Alyxx Duggins, Shawn Duggins, Jr., Nathan Duggins, Faith Steltzer, Tristan Flory, Keaton Thompson, Baylee Smith, Natalie Smith, Kaia Vander Werf, Jordan Vander Werf, Gavin DeRaad, Brevin DeRaad and Avery DeRaad; and his special friend, Mary Parsons of Kellogg.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. The family will greet friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be designated to the Pleasant View United Methodist Church or the Kellogg Historical Society.
