Newton Police Department

• Scott W. Cupples, 30, of Newton, was charged with second-degree criminal mischief and fifth-degree theft when police were called at 7:04 p.m. Friday to Farver True Value in reference to a shop lifter. Cupples was seen by employees taking merchandise and running from the store. Cupples allegedly caused more than $1,000 in damage to the store's front doors. Cupples was in possession of items valued at $60.17. Cupples was arrested.

• Anthony K. Nicholas, 24, of Newton, is cited with failure to yield to a pedestrian after police were called to an accident just before 5 p.m. Friday at the intersection of North Second Avenue and West Third Street North. Nicholas was driving a 2016 black Chevy Silverado when he stopped at the intersection but allegedly failed to yield for a pedestrian who was crossing the roadway. The pedestrian was transported to Skiff Medical Center by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Nicholas told police he didn’t see the pedestrian.

• Chase A. Healey, 38, of Kellogg, is cited with following to closely, and Austin Jacob James, 18, of Newton, was arrested on warrants after police were called to a collision at 5:39 p.m. Nov. 29 at the intersection of First Avenue East and East 19th Street South. The driver who was struck, Eugene G. Adams, 79, of Newton, claimed he was stopped to turn and had his turn signal on when Healey struck him from behind. Healey and his passenger told police they didn’t know if the driver in front of them stopped completely, but claimed the driver slammed on the brakes suddenly and didn’t have the turn signal on. Healey’s passenger, James, was arrested on four Jasper County Sheriff’s Office warrants.

• Blake E. Samuelson, 18, of Monroe, is charged with possession of controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia after police stopped Samuelson during a traffic stop at 8:37 p.m. Tuesday in the 11200 block of Highway 14 South. Samuelson was pulled over for exceeding the posted speed limit of 55. Samuelson didn’t have a registration card and when he looked in the glovebox there was a large pipe and four bags of marijuana inside.
