ISU Students to present concepts for Maytag Campus

AMES — Fifth-year seniors and graduate students from Iowa State University’s landscape architecture department will present revised concepts on how the buildings and greenspace be-tween the DMACC Campus and the former Maytag Corporate Campus can be utilized.

From 1:30 to 5 p.m. Friday at ISU’s College of Art and Design, students will present revisions based on the comments they received at a Nov. 16 presentation of their initial ideas at the Maytag Campus’s Innovation Center in Newton. Professor Caroline Westort had her class in town early this year to meet with several community leaders and to learn the history of the buildings and land surrounding both campuses.

The students toured the complexes and even walked to the downtown square. A few days after the Newton visit the class selected Newton as this semesters’ project.

Westort asked those attending to fill out a comment sheet about what they liked or didn’t like about each concept. She shared the comments with the class and gave them a couple of weeks to refine their presentations before the final review on Friday.

“I was very impressed with what the students presented and the professional manner in which they talked about their concepts. I’m looking forward to seeing their final drawings on (Friday)”, said Frank Liebl, Executive Director of the Newton Development Corporation.

Kim Didier, project manager for the new DMACC property said, “I was blown away by the creativity of the students. They had so many cool and interesting ideas about the space in the context of the broader community. Most of these ideas hadn’t even occurred to me before and I was just so struck by their fresh views and thoughts. We are very fortunate to have had the students work on this project and share their talents with us.”
