David L. Altemeier

David L.“Baldy” Altemeier, 79, of Newton, died on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 5, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m., Monday, until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorials to the Iowa Chapter of the Horseman Benevolent and Protective Association may be left at the funeral home.

David, the son of Dale and Marge (Bergman) Altemeier, was born on Aug. 25, 1937 in Newton. He grew up in Newton until his family moved to Comanche, Texas in 1950. David graduated from Comanche High School in 1956 and then returned to Newton to work at the Maytag Company. He worked in several areas at Maytag, including dryer, assembly and sheet metal, until joining the receiving department in 1977 where he worked until his retirement in June of 1986. He was also a longtime farmer and owned, trained,and breed thoroughbred horses. David was a member of I-Club, Parents without Partners, Iowa HBPA and a lifetime member of the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, St. Louis Cardinal, and horse racing fan.

David is survived by his son, Curtis (Susan) Altemeier of Newton; three grandchildren, Nicole (Ben) Miles of Newton, Heather (Joe) Swanson of Newton, and Devon Altemeier of Lathrop, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Dexter Miles and Jack Swanson; his daughter-in-law, Danielle Altemeier Krosk of Lathrop; brother, Mark (Mary) Altemeier of Newton; his special friend, Jan Wolters of Newton; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and son, Bill Altemeier.
