Wreck sends one woman to hospital

Medical helicopter not used at accident

A Sunday accident led to at least one person being transported to Skiff Medical Center.

According to a Jasper County Sheriff’s Office report, a collision occurred late Sunday morning at the intersection of Highway 14 and N. 23rd Avenue W., near Union Cemetery.

Rachel N. Cook, 25, of Newton, was transported to Skiff Medical Center by ambulance with unknown injuries.
Newton Police Dept. Lt. Bill Henniger said a medical helicopter was initially placed on stand-by, as accidents at that intersection often involve high speeds and serious injuries, but the helicopter wasn't utilized. He said it's likely the injuries were non-life threatening.

Cook was driving a Nissan Sentra south into Newton when a Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Chad M. Ray, 46, of Newton, pulled into her path. She struck the driver's side rear section of the pickup, and her vehicle is likely totaled.
Ray was cited for failing to yield. No word was available on Cook's condition at presstime.
