Mustang girls cruise past Greene County

MONROE — A big second half propelled the Prairie City-Monroe girls’ basketball team to another easy win Tuesday night.

Three Mustangs scored in scored in double figures. The team turned it over just six times during a 68-27 win over Greene County on Tuesday in the Heart of Iowa Conference opener.

Senior Kayla Jennings had 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Senior Bailey Brodersen and freshman Regan Freland both had career-highs with 15 points as the Class 3A No. 15 Mustangs stayed unbeaten on the season.

PCM (2-0 overall, 1-0 in HOIC play) held a five-point lead after one quarter. The Mustangs pushed their advantage to 12 at halftime then outscored the Rams 38-9 in the second half.

It was the season opener for Greene County.

“There was a feeling out period, but once we got in our groove, things started happening,” PCM coach Jeff Lindsay said.

“In the second half, we decided to press for the first time this season, and we created a lot of turnovers.”

The Mustangs finished with 14 steals in the win.

After Jennings’ five steals was senior Kaylee Townsend’s four and Freland’s three.

Townsend also had seven rebounds and two blocks, while Freland added four assists and two blocks.

Sophomore Camryn Wignall scored seven points and dished out two assists. Senior Katie Vande Wall tallied six boards and two assists and Brodersen finished with two blocks.

The Mustangs don’t play again until opening a HOIC girl-boy varsity doubleheader against Roland-Story at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
