One of the joys of living in Newton is that we have so many opportunities to satisfy a craving for literature, theater, arts and music. With all the political talk for months on end, it is a retreat to enjoy any of these things. Tonight at 7 p.m. is another opportunity to which I am looking forward. Expanding our outlook leads to a new view.
Though I’ve experience several types of jazz, I haven’t experienced “Gypsy Jazz” so I am really excited. The Rhythm Future Quartet, an acoustic jazz ensemble, offers a newly minted sound. I’m not sure what “fiery arrangements of Gypsy jazz” is but I know that Jason Anick (violinist), Olli Soikkeli(guitarist), Greg Loughman (bass), and Max O’Rourke (second guitar) do. Olli from Finland has been coined as “the Finnish boy wonder” in the Brooklyn jazz scene.
What I most enjoy about the various concerts sponsored by the Jasper County Concert Association is that they provide variety and they use the Centre for Performance of our own high school in Newton. I truly would like to see every band and vocal student be able to experience these concerts. Part of the publicity for the Rhythm Future Quartet-Gypsy Jazz Band says that we will hear rhythms from around the world. Imagine we, in Newton and surrounding areas have the opportunity to sit in a comfortable seat and be apart of world music. After reading the program highlights including “My Blue Heaven,” “Cherokee” and “Caravan.” I can’t imagine which will be my favorite.
