Eight Tigerhawks earn all-district football honors

Jimmy Camp was a big part of Colfax-Mingo’s success on the gridiron during the Tigerhawks’ run to the second round of the playoffs in 2015.

Camp entered the 2016 season with preseason all-state accolades from iowapreps.com. After the Tigerhawks finished 1-8 overall and 1-6 in Class A District 5 play, Camp was the only Colfax-Mingo player named to the district’s first team.

The all-District 5 honorees were announced Thursday night after district champion Gladbrook-Reinbeck won its second straight Class A title at the UNI-Dome. The Rebels completed a 13-0 record with a 20-19 win over Algona Garrigan in the title game.

Camp earned first-team honors as a defensive end. His teammates, senior Adam Teed and junior Colton Lourens, were named to the second team, while senior Wyatt Owens and juniors Jarod Nichols and Nick Barnes all earned honorable mention honors.

The final two selections were senior Jake Dunsbergen and sophomore Zarek Hill, who both earned Golden Awards, which recognize players who would have been all-district players had they not gotten hurt.

Camp led the Tigerhawk defense with 17 tackles for loss, which ranked second in the district and all of Class A. Camp added 46 tackles and one sack defensively, while also gaining 150 rushing yards, 155 receiving yards and five total touchdowns on offense.

Teed, who also earned academic all-district honors, earned second-team honors as a linebacker.

Teed led C-M in tackles with 64. Teed finished with eight tackles for loss and two sacks, while hauling in 18 catches, 165 yards and two scores on offense.

Lourens made the second team as an offensive lineman. He started for the first time in his career and will provide the Tigerhawks with some experience next season. He had 12 tackles on defense.

Nichols hauled in 26 catches for 243 yards and a touchdown as one of the Tigerhawks’ best receiver, while Barnes had 17 tackles, one fumble recovery and an interception he returned for a TD on defense. Owens was a two-way starter on the offensive and defensive lines and finished with 16 tackles.

Hill finished with 19 catches for 215 yards and three TDs on offense, while collecting 25 tackles and a sack on defense.

Dunsbergen was another two-way starter in the trenches. He finished with 35.5 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and one sack.

Hill and Dunsbergen were both injured in the loss to North Tama in Week 6.

Joining Teed on the academic all-district team were Barnes, Holister Koenig, Brady Berkey and Trinity Schroeder.
