Nine area volleyball players honored by SICL coaches

Colfax-Mingo junior Ries Wilson and Lynnville-Sully senior Brenna Lanser were among the top 10 in several statistical categories inside the South Iowa Cedar League this season.

For their efforts, the SICL coaches named both area athletes to the all-conference’s first team recently.

Wilson and Lanser were among the 10-player first team, while Colfax-Mingo senior Amy Russell and Lynnville-Sully senior Jelissa Rozendaal were named to the nine-player second team.

The other five area players recognized by the SICL were Lynnville-Sully junior Camryn Russell, sophomore Carson Fisk and senior Makenzy Rozendaal and Colfax-Mingo senior Dakota Hostetter and junior Megan Earles.

Wilson and Lanser were two of the best all-around players in the league.

Wilson ranked second in the conference with 418 kills and 5.10 kills per set while also ranking seventh with 254 digs. She had 35 aces.

Inside SICL play, Wilson was second with 216 kills and second in kills per set at 5.84. She ranked fifth with 133 digs and totaled 18 aces. Her 5.10 kills per set overall also ranked first in all of Class 2A.

Lanser ranked in the top eight of four statistical categories. She finished second in digs with 387, third in kills per set at 3.20, seventh in kills with 195 and tied for eighth with 48 aces.

In SICL play, Lanser ranked second with 227 digs, fourth with 111 kills, tied for second with 31 aces and fifth in kills per set at 3.17. She had 17 blocks on the season, 11 of which came in SICL matches.

Amy Russell also made a big impact in her return to the court for the Tigerhawks. She ranked fifth in aces with 51, eighth in kills with 187 and tied for 10th in digs with 229. In SICL play, she was fourth in aces with 29, fourth in digs with 142 and seventh with 92 kills.

Jelissa Rozendaal earned second-team honors after collecting 49 kills, 10 aces, 59 assists and 202 digs. She was 184-of-197 in serving. The numbers inside SICL play included 29 kills, six aces, 33 assists and 114 digs. She was 107-of-113 in serves.

Hostetter, Earles, Fisk and Camryn Russell all were selected to the honorable mention team. Makenzy Rozendaal received a Golden Award, which goes to players who would have been all-conference players if it wasn’t for an injury.

Earles was the Tigerhawks’ setter. She ranked second in the SICL with 583 assists and also finished with 24 kills, 20 aces and 110 digs. She was 265-of-280 in serves. Earles finished with 299 assists in SICL matches.

Hostetter played double duty again this season, qualifying for her fourth state cross country meet and also helping the Tigerhawks to their most wins in a few decades.

Hostetter finished with 47 kills, 154 digs and 24 blocks. She was 128-of-133 from behind the service line. Hostetter tallied 25 kills and 85 digs inside SICL play.

Fisk ranked in the top six in three different statistical categories.

Overall, she was fifth with 381 assists and 10th with 232 digs. Fisk also had 30 kills, 45 aces and she was 332-of-357. Inside the SICL, Fisk ranked second in aces with 31, fifth in assists with 212 and sixth in digs with 130. She hit on 211 of her 225 serves.

Camryn Russell was third on the team in kills with 74. She finished with 162 digs, 28 blocks and was 235-of-248 with 19 aces in serves. Inside the SICL, Russell finished with 40 kills, 94 digs and 10 blocks. She hit on 137 of her 142 serves while serving up 12 aces.

Makenzy Rozendaal was limited to only 27 sets this season and 13 of those sets were in SICL play. She finished with 29 kills, 36 digs and four aces on the season. She was 29-of-33 in serving.

The SICL Coach of the Year honor went to Montezuma’s Lacey Taylor, who guided the Bravettes to their first-ever conference title.

Both Colfax-Mingo and Lynnvile-Sully finished 7-3 in SICL play, along with Belle Plaine. Iowa Valley and Montezuma both went 9-1.
