Postseason prep wrestling assignments announced

Newton High’s Cardinals learned Wednesday they are in Class 3A District 7 when the Iowa High School Athletic Association posted its 2017 high school wrestling postseason assignments.

Sectional and district assignments for 2A and 1A also were announced. Sectional tournaments are Feb. 4 and district tournaments are Feb. 11.

The other four area high school wrestling teams found out where they wrestle in sectionals and districts in 2017. All are in different sectionals and district tournaments.

Newton will be at Waukee on Feb. 11 for 3A district tournament action. Joining those two schools will be Carlisle, Des Moines East, Des Moines Roosevelt, Dowling Catholic, Urbandale and West Des Moines Valley.

Prairie City-Monroe is in 2A Sectional 9 at Bondurant-Farrar along with Grinnell, Knoxville, Saydel and South Tama. The first and second-place winners in each weight class from Sectional 9 and Sectional 10 advance to the 2A District 6 tournament at Knoxville.

Also in 2A, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter is in Sectional 7 with host Ballard, East Marshall, Gilbert, North Polk and West Marshall. The first and second place winners in each weight class from Sectional 7 and Sectional 8 advance to the District 4 tournament at Iowa Falls in Alden.

Colfax-Mingo is in the 1A Sectional 10 hosted by Interstate 35 in Truro. Other teams in the sectional are East Union, Martensdale-St. Marys, Mount Ayr, Ogden, Southeast Warren and Wayne. The first and second place winners in each weight class from the sectional advance to the 1A District 5 tournament at Pleasantville.

Lynnville-Sully is in the 1A Sectional 2 tournament at Montezuma with Belle Plaine, BGM, English Valleys, HLV, Iowa Valley and Tri-County. The first and second place winners in each weight class from the sectional advance to the 1A District 1 tournament at Hudson.

The top two wrestlers in each weight class from district tournaments qualify for the 2017 state tournament, Feb. 16-18, in Des Moines.

Newton and Colfax-Mingo open the 2016-17 wrestling season on Nov. 29 while Lynnville-Sully is slated to begin on Dec. 1. The season openers for PCM and CMB are scheduled for Dec. 3.
