MINGO — A Mingo home was destroyed by a fire Saturday evening and the cause is under investigation.
Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty, who is also currently the acting Mingo fire chief, said a call about flames coming from the structure came in about 11:45 p.m. No one was home at the time because the family that lives there was away on a camping trip.
Firefighters from Mingo, Colfax, Baxter and Bondurant needed about five hours to put out the blaze. Halferty said the damage is extensive and the home is likely a total loss.
Jasper County Sheriff deputies and the Colfax Police Department assisted with traffic control at the fire.
Halferty said there was no apparent cause to the fire, so the cause will remain under investigation. The home is located along Mohawk Drive near the former Colfax-Mingo Middle School building.
One of the residents of the home is a Colfax-Mingo High School student. Clothing and supply donations for the student and younger children in the family will be accepted at Tuesday’s Colfax-Mingo junior varsity football game, along with a can at concessions for cash donations.
Anyone interesting in helping the family can also call Colfax-Mingo Junior-Senior High School at 515-674-4111.
