Indianola beats Newton’s junior varsity football team in finale

INDIANOLA — Newton High’s junior varsity football team concluded its season Thursday with a 40-22 loss to host Indianola.

The Cardinals had a brief 8-7 lead in the first quarter when quarterback Ryan Barr scored a touchdown on a 7-yard run. Barr flipped the 2-point conversion pass to Logan Zibert. There was 9:10 left in the first quarter.

Indianola led 14-8 at the end of the opening period. The Indians were up 19-8 when Newton’s Aaron Bartels and Josh Adkinson combined to sack the Indianola quarterback in the end zone for a safety giving the Cardinals two points.

Newton closed the gap to 19-16 on a 2-yard touchdown run by Damir Gumerov in the second period. Indianola held a 26-16 halftime lead.

Zibert caught a 23-yard pass from Barr for a TD in the third quarter to pull the Cardinals to within four-points, 26-22. The Indians responded with two touchdowns before the end of the period for their 40-22 lead.

Newton rushed for 256 yards on 52 carries led by Zibert’s 110 yards on 19 carries. Zibert also caught three passes for 45 yards. Thomas Cox rushed for 83 yards on 16 carries.

Barr completed passed to six different receivers in the game. He finished 13-of-30 passing for 157 yards. He threw three interceptions. Grant Garvis made three catches for 30 yards.

Adkinson led the defensive charge for Newton. Ty Arguello made an interceptions.

Newton’s junior varsity finished 0-8.
