Grassley, Judge spar over US Supreme Court vacancy

SIOUX CITY — Incumbent U.S. Senate Republican Chuck Grassley and Democratic challenger Patty Judge sparred over the U.S. Supreme Court vacancy during their Sioux City debate.

Among other criticisms Judge leveled at Grassley and his GOP colleagues on Wednesday night, she cited Grassley’s refusal to hold Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on the nomination of Appeals Court Judge Merrick Garland to the high court. Judge characterized Grassley’s decision as an example of the political games played in Washington.

Grassley disagreed, saying voters should play a role in such matters when they select the next president. He told radio reporters Tuesday in Washington that the new president should make the choice and that the Senate Republicans “can’t just simply stonewall.”

Both candidates expressed their support for ensuring a federal safety net for farmers.
