NHS freshmen lose

WEST DES MOINES — Jeremiah Johnson broke loose for a long touchdown to get Newton High’s freshmen on the scoreboard in the first half Friday night. Johnson’s touchdown allowed the Cardinals to go in at halftime, trailing host Valley, 48-6.

Newton opened the second half with a long touchdown pass from Kyle Long to Julian Hotchkin. The Cardinals weren’t able to catch up, losing 62-22.

“They were a tough opponent and did a lot of things really well. It showed us what we need to be if we want to be a great football team,” Newton freshman head coach Trent Powers said. “We are going to learn from it and get ready to finish the season out against Indianola.”

Dylan Farver scored a rushing TD later in the third quarter. William Cheng and Hotchkin each had a 2-point conversion in the game.

Johnson rushed for 94 yards on 13 carries. Cheng had 71 yards on nine carries and Farver had 23 yards on six carries.

Long went 6-of-15 passing for 119 yards. Hotchkin caught five passes for 127 yards.

Defensively, Hotchkin had three tackles and an interception. Camden Winther made five tackles and Zane Kohlmeyer had four tackles. Destin Schroder and Ryan Brown each had three tackles.
