Clothing drive kicks-off Monday, Art on a Cart to be displayed

Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Entries Accepted Oct. 14-21 — Decorate a pumpkin or gourd as your favorite book character. Pumpkins may be painted, dressed, or accessorized, but not carved. Entries will be accepted for Youth/Family and Adult categories, and should be dropped off at the library between Oct. 14 and 21. The public will vote for winners in both categories beginning Oct. 21. Winners will receive a Halloween treat basket. Call 641-792-4108.

Winter Clothing Drive

Donations Accepted Monday through Oct. 29 — During the month of October, the library is collecting new cold weather clothing for children ages 6-18. Donated clothing will be given to the Newton Community School District, to be distributed to local children in need. Donations may be dropped off at the circulation desk anytime between Oct. 17 and 29. Items being collected include: sweaters, gloves, coats, hats, socks and scarves. Art on a Cart

2 p.m. Monday — Join us for an afternoon of painting. This creative, hands on program, features a new craft or art project each month and is designed to be inclusive of adults of all abilities. All materials provided.

Cookbook Club

6 p.m. Oct. 24 —Explore a new cookbook each month. Check in with the information desk to select a recipe or choose a recipe of your own, then bring your dish to the monthly potluck. This month’s theme is baking and participants will have the opportunity to swap baked goods. Call 641-792-4108.

Candyland at the Library.

4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 27 — Visit our life-sized Candyland and trick-or-treat during Newton Main Street’s Halloween celebration. Contact Phyllis Peter at 641-792-4108 with questions.

Haunted Iowa with Terry Fisk

Noon Oct. 29 — Join Terry Fisk, paranormal investigator and author of “The Iowa Road Guide to Haunted Locations,” for an inside look at some of the most haunted places in Iowa. Fisk will also discuss his experiences with mediums, hypnosis and the afterlife.

Meet Local Author
Liz Costanzo

1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 3 — Join local author, Liz Costanzo, for a discussion of her new book, "Flashback." This Vietnam era novel is set in Newton and appeals to readers of all ages. The adult meet and greet is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m., with a separate teen event taking place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served at both events.
