Aquagirls compete in Ram Relays

PLEASANT HILL — NCMP sophomore Lindsey Blommers and freshman Allison Paulius combined to win the 2x100-yard breaststroke relay at Thursday’s Southeast Polk Ram Relays.

It was the lone event win for the NCMP Aquagirls, who finished sixth with 48 points in the all-relay swim meet. Ankeny won the team title with 101 points followed by Lewis Central with 62, Southeast Polk with 57, Atlantic with 56 and Indianola with 52 points for fifth. Des Moines East was seventh with 27 points.

“We have always loved the Ram Relays and have always performed well there,” NCMP head coach Sarah Patterson said. “Last night was no exception. The veterans were excited to swim, and the new people were excited to be  apart of it.”

Patterson said she was pleased with how the team performed, beating Des Moines East and were right up there with Indianola, Atlantic, Southeast Polk, and Lewis Central.

“This is the first meet of the season where I have felt that we really knocked it out of the park from the first swim to the last,” Patterson said.

Blommers and Paulius won their relay race in 2 minutes, 26.25 seconds — a winning margin of three seconds. Paulius led off with a 1:19.39 leg and Blommers, who is ranked No. 5 in the state in the 100 breaststroke, posted a 1:06.86.

NCMP return to Southeast Polk for regional action Oct. 29. Before the regional meet, the Aquagirls have two conference meets next week to conclude the regular season.

“There were a ton of other great swims and races — it truly was a team effort,” Patterson said. “The girls are super excited to take on Indianola at the conference meet this Tuesday.  The swims last night should fire them up.”

NCMP swims in the first-ever Little Hawkeye Conference meet at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Indianola. Indianola’s entrance into the LHC this season pushes girls’ swim teams to four in the conference. Oskaloosa and Grinnell are the other two teams.

On Oct. 22, NCMP swims in the North Central Iowa Conference meet in Waterloo.
