Raiders fix mistakes in win over Falcons

PARKERSBURG — The Collins-Maxwell/Baxter football put together their best all-around game of the season in a blowout win over Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday night.

CMB rushed for 284 yards, did not have a turnover and committed only four penalties in the 46-21 road win.

Blake Coughenour rushed for 189 yards and two scores, while Braydon Aker threw for 75 yards and two scores and rushed for 85 yards and two TDs.

The Falcons led 7-6 after one quarter, but CMB outscored A-P 20-0 in the second quarter and 13-0 in the fourth quarter to win easily.

The Raiders improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in Class 2A District 3 action.

Aplington-Parkersburg lost its fourth straight game and dropped to 2-5 overall and 1-4 in district play.

Aker put the Raiders on the board with a 23-yard TD pass to Marcus Mitchell in the first quarter. Aker’s 3-yard TD run gave the Raiders the lead for good in the second quarter.

The junior quarterback added his second rushing score with a 16-yard TD run midway through the second. That put CMB up 18-7.

The Raiders led 26-7 at halftime following a 10-yard touchdown run by Coughenour and a two-point conversion pass from Aker to Travis Lindemoen.

The lead grew to 33-7 in the third when Hunter McWhirter hooked up with Tucker Maxwell on an 8-yard TD pass play.

The Falcons scored two straight touchdowns to get within 33-21, but CMB pulled away in the fourth following a 1-yard touchdown run by Coughenour and a 13-yard touchdown pass from Aker to Lindemoen.

Lindemoen had two catches for 26 yards, while Maxwell hauled in five passes for 38 yards.

CMB converted 12-of-16 on third down and 2-for-2 on fourth down. The only turnover of the game was an interception thrown by A-P quarterback Carter Cuvelier.

Cuvelier threw a TD pass to Riley Barrett and rushed for another score. The Falcons rushed for 199 yards and passed for 113 in the loss. CMB out-gained its hosts 411-312.

CMB’s defense was led by Jason Hillgren’s eight solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Ben Gunderson and Coughenour each had six solo tackles, while Caleb Van Zante had five solo tackles. Maxwell had the CMB interception.

The Raiders host district leader Dike-New Hartford at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Baxter.
