Payton is a powerful advocate

I first met Patrick Payton as an income tax instructor for the paralegal program at Des Moines Area Community College in 1981. It was a night class and I had a preconceived notion that it would be extremely boring. Patrick conveyed the material with enthusiasm … which I later learned was characteristic of him whenever he took on a task.

Shortly after completing the tax course, it was time for me to do an internship as a paralegal. I had opportunities to work in a couple law firms but the director of the paralegal program told me that working with Patrick Payton would offer much broader opportunities. The director was certainly correct.

I worked for Payton & Associates as I completed college. Patrick took on cases from all walks of life; large or small issues didn’t matter, his underlying objective was to see that his clients’ interests were protected.

Wrapping up undergraduate work, Patrick Payton strongly encouraged me to go on to law school. I saw his satisfaction in serving others in their time of need — that resonated with me. After finishing law school, I returned to practice law with Payton & Associates and thoroughly enjoyed walking with clients through their tough times as I had seen Patrick do so many times before.

A few things I’ve seen over the years:

• Patrick Payton is a zealous advocate for those he represents.

• He adheres to Abraham Lincoln’s concept that government should be of the people, by the people, for the people.

• Patrick expects those who serve the public to actually be of service to the public.

• He doesn’t shy away from sensitive issues.

As a state representative, Patrick Payton will be a great listener and powerful advocate.
