Chrystal (Ebert) Lehfeld, 86, formerly of Kellogg, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Chrystal was the daughter of Gus and Amelia Ebert. Born in the Gilman area, the family later moved near Kellogg. She attended the Rushville County School and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1948, and later from Central College. She started her first teaching career at Gilman, with her twin sister, Carol.

Charles Lehfeld and Chrystal were married in 1951, at the Kellogg Lutheran Church. Their first home was at Oakland, where they both taught for several years. They later moved to Des Moines, where their three children continued their education at Iowa State. Following her husband’s death, she moved to Calvin Community for several years.

Chrystal is survived by her three children, Dan Lehfeld of Houston, Texas, William “Bill” Lehfeld of Corpus Christi, Texas and Kristan (Steve) Santema of Frisco, Texas; two grandsons, Scot Santema and Brett Santema; two granddaughters, Lauren (Brian) Baker and Lindsay (Luke) Robinson; two great-grandsons, Ben Baker and Emmet Robinson. Also surviving are two sisters, Carmen (William) Gill, her twin Carol Vander Ploeg; and one brother, Gael (Janet) Ebert.

Proceeding her in death were her parents; sister Joyce Parsons; brothers-in-law, Russell Parson and Mark Vander Ploeg; and her husband, Charles.

A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7 at Westover in Des Moines. Visitation will be one hour before the service.
