St. Stephen’s to host annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church is inviting all furry, or maybe not-so-furry, friends to the annual Blessing of the Animals. The event will take place outside at 4 p.m. Sunday at the church, 223 E. Fourth St. N.

“St. Stephen’s has been blessing the animals for many decades,” the Rev. Karen Crawford said. “I have been at St. Stephen’s two years now and this will be my second year.”

All animals, cats, dogs, lizards, snakes, birds, fish and even the dearly loved stuffed variety, are invited to the blessing. Crawford does ask that all pets be on a leash or in a carrier, especially if they are ornery.

The blessing of animals started almost 800 years ago when St. Francis of Assisi introduced the idea that we are but one of the many creations of God and all are blessed in God’s eyes, Crawford said. The annual event occurs once a year, closest to the anniversary of the death of St. Francis, which is Oct. 4. This year’s blessing was moved back a week as to not conflict with the Crop Walk on Oct. 2.

“It is important to realize that we are part of God’s creation and that we are charged with the care of all that was created which includes not only the animals but also the rest of creation, our environment,” Crawford said.

During the event, those participating in the blessing service are encouraged to donate to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League. JCARL is currently in immediate need of cat litter, wet cat food, peanut butter, laundry soap, dish soap, fabuloso, paper towels, Odoban and fabric softener. They can also always use cat toys, raw hides for dogs and cat or dog treats.
