Newton falls at Fort Dodge; area prep football roundup

Newton fell from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday night while Lynnville-Sully improved to 6-0. Prairie City-Monroe rolled to another win while Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter lost in their respective district contests.

Fort Dodge 43, Newton 21

FORT DODGE — There was an exchange of turnovers early in the game followed by an exchange of touchdowns. Unfortunately, Newton High’s Cardinals could not continue to match host Fort Dodge’s Dodgers TD-for-TD in their Class 4A District 4 clash Friday, losing 43-21.

“We learn and go back to work,” Newton senior linebacker Brady Smith said after the first loss of the season for the Cardinals.

The Dodgers got three touchdown runs from Joe Artis, who was playing running back for the first time this season for Fort Dodge, to go with two long touchdown passes from quarterback Drake Miller to Jonny Bowser and Trey Mosley.

Newton’s Jaise Gulling recovered a Dodger fumble two minutes into the game, but three plays later, Fort Dodge intercepted a pass by Newton quarterback Garrett Sturtz. Miller had back-to-back pasess to Bowser to score a Dodger touchdown with 8:55 left in the first quarter.

The Cardinals responded with a 12-play, 70-yard scoring drive — all but one play on the ground — capped by a 1-yd TD run by Reese Rosenquist. Zach Combs kicked the extra point to tie the game.

Artis got loose for a 22-yard TD run at the 10:48 mark of the second quarter. The Cardinals moved right down the field again, but got bogged down in the scoring zone.

Combs kicked a 37-yard field goal with 8:01 left in the period. Artis bulled over from 1 yard out four minutes later and Newton answered with another drive resulting in a 31-yard field goal by Combs. Newton trailed 20-13 at halftime.

On the opening drive of the second half, the Cardinals pushed to the Fort Dodge 20. Combs’ 37-yard field goal attempt at the 8:48 mark hit off the goal post. Two plays later, Savion Poe raced 60 yards for a Fort Dodge touchdown.

“We answered, but with field goals. We have to finish drives, especially against good teams such as Fort Dodge,” Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright said. “We were out of position a lot of times on defense tonight.”

Training 29-12, heading into the fourth quarter, Newton punched the ball over the goal line on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Sturtz. A two-point conversion play failed, leaving the Cardinals down by 10 points, 29-19, with 8 minutes led the game.

Fort Dodge scored back-to-back TDs on long plays to put the game away with 5 minutes remaining. Newton’s Reese Rosenquist scored two points on a safety when he tackled a Fort Dodger runner in the end zone.

Newton (5-1) is 1-1 in district play as is Fort Dodge. The Cardinals host Southeast Polk at 7:30 p.m. Friday at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Southeast Polk lost to top-ranked Valley 45-0 Friday and Indianola beat Marshalltown, 38-21.

Newton's freshmen lost for the first time this season, 24-16.

Lynnville-Sully 43, Pekin 14

PEKIN — Lynnville-Sully scored three times through the air in the first half, leading host Pekin 22-7, then when Pekin had a touchdown to start the second half to make it an 8-point game, the Hawks’ running game took over.

Gage Vander Leest scored on a 51-yard run in the third quarter for the Hawks. Sage Zylstra had a 36-yard TD run and Evan Squires scored from 5 yards out in the fourth quarter.

Lynnville-Sully improved to 6-0 overall and more importantly, the Hawks are 4-0 in Class A District 6 play.

Elijah Collins threw TD passes of 34 yards, 28 yards and 61 yards in the first half to Caden Dunsbergen and Brevin Hansen. Hansen had two TD catches and kicked five extra points in the game. Collins was 7-of-16 passing for 171 yards.

Zylstra rushed for 154 yards on 13 carries, scored a touchdown and a 2-point conversion on a run.

Vander Leest, Ryan Hofer, Dylan Rooseboom and Jesse Van Wyk led the Hawk defensive charge with five tackles a piece.

Lynnville-Sully has a district showdown at 7 p.m. Friday against New London, which is also 4-0 in district play, in Sully.

PCM 49, Chariton 0

MONROE — The Mustangs ended Homecoming week with an easy win over Chariton during Class 2A, District 6 play Friday night.

PCM pitched a shutout for the third straight game. The Mustang defense has allowed just six points in getting to 4-0 in district play. Class 2A No. 10 PCM improved to 5-1 on the season.

The Mustangs led 42-0 at halftime and scored on their first possession of the second half before putting in backups.

Sheldon Speers was 8-for-10 through the air with 180 yards and three touchdowns, Noah Anderson rushed for 90 yards and two scores and Wes Cummings gained another 100 yards on the ground.

Jarron Trausch also had a 25-yard TD run and a 45-yard TD catch in the win. Luke Greiner hauled in a 25-yard TD catch, too.

The final touchdown of the game came on a 10-yard run by offensive tackle James Snodgrass,

The Mustangs out-gained Chariton (0-6, 0-4) 480-120 in total offense.

North Tama 34, Colfax-Mingo 13

COLFAX — The Redhawks stopped Colfax-Mingo on the 1-yard line as time expired in the first half and then used that momentum to outscore the Tigerhawks 18-0 in the third quarter during a Class A District 6 win.

Colfax-Mingo led 13-9 following two touchdown runs by Jimmy Camp before North Tama jumped back in front in the final 2 minutes of the first half.

Cael Kopriva went in from 2 yards out on the Redhawks' final drive of the second quarter. He scored three rushing TDs on the night and gained 113 yards on 14 carries. Kopriva also threw for 117 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown pass to Hale Hulme in the third quarter.

Colfax-Mingo picked off Kopriva twice on the night, but the Redhawks rushed for 310 yards in the win. Jarod Nichols and Trent Jones each had an interception for Colfax-Mingo, which fell to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in district play.

North Tama improved to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in league play. The win ended the Redhawks' three-game losing streak and spoiled Colfax-Mingo's Homecoming.

Reegan Van Dyke finished 10-of-19 through the air for 154 yards. He also led the rushing attack with 41 yards on 19 carries. Camp gained 32 yards on nine carries.

Zarek Hill hauled in three passes for 93 yards before leaving early in the second half with a shoulder injury. The Tigerhawks also lost leading tackler Jake Dunsbergen in the first half with a knee injury.

Saydel 32, CMB 27

DES MOINES — Collins-Maxwell/Baxter continued to move the ball offensively, but miscues plagued the Raiders again.

CMB out-gained Saydel 467-419 in total offense, but the Raiders turned it over three times in the loss.

The Eagles rallied from a 21-12 first-half deficit to win. Saydel scored with no time on the clock in the first half to cut CMB's lead to three, and then the Eagles scored the first two TDs of the second half to take the lead for good.

Raider senior Blake Coughenour rushed for 117 yards and one score and also had 94 receiving yards and two TDs in the loss.

Craig Garrison rushed 23 times for 217 yards and two scores for Saydel, while T.J. Stephenson passed for 120 yards and two scores and rushed for 70 more and another score. Saydel rushed for 299 yards on the night.

Coughenour answered Garrison's 42-yard TD run with an 11-yard scoring scamper. That put the Raiders up 7-6 in the first quarter, but Stephenson hit Cole Riddlebarger on a 14-yard TD pass to go back in front.

Hunter McWhirter hooked up with Zach Schafer from 3 yards out to put the Raiders up 14-12 and then Coughenour's 7-yard TD pass from Braydon Aker made it 21-12.

Stephenson hit paydirt on an 11-yard TD run to give Saydel another lead before Garrison put the win away with a 73-yard run.

Coughenour scored on a 77-yard pass from Aker to get CMB within five with 1:37 left in the game, but Saydel held on for the win.

McWhirter threw for 190 yards, one TD and one interception, while Aker had 118 passing yards and two TDs. The Raiders also lost two fumbles.

Travis Lindemoen hauled in five passes for 96 yards, while Coughenour had four catches for 94 yards. Brady Kemp finished with seven catches and 73 yards in the loss.

Jason Hillgren led the CMB defense with seven tackles, while Will Clapper had five tackles and a sack.

CMB dropped to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in 2A District 3 play. Saydel improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in district play.
