Clements ready to serve Newton in new law office

Bondurant native and current Colfax resident Dusty Clements is branching out by opening her own law firm at Clements Law & Mediation in Newton. Clements purchased the building at 209 N. Second Ave. W. and is working to build her clientele in several areas of the law.

“I am very interested in family law and juvenile law — those are my two areas,” Clements said. “There are just not a whole lot of individuals doing that around here. I am also certified in mediation so I am hoping to build a successful mediation practice here.”

Along with family and juvenile law and mediation, Clements also provides services in criminal defense, real estate and estate planning and probate. She is a member of the Iowa State Bar Association, Central Iowa Academy of Collaborative Professionals, Certified Family Law Mediator and is Certified in Collaborative Law.

Clements moved with her husband and four children to Colfax in 2006. After operating a successful daycare for seven years, she decided to further her education in the area of law.

In 2012, Clements graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice and Public Administration from Upper Iowa University. The next year, she received her master’s degree in forensic psychology from the University of North Dakota.

After receiving her master’s, Clements enrolled at Drake University’s Law School, graduating with Honors in 2016.

“During my three years at Drake, I interned for the General Counsel at ChildServe and interned at the Iowa House of Representatives,” Clements said. “I also served as a Guardian Ad Litem for children through the Middleton Center for Children’s Rights.”

Clements first came to Newton when she started clerking for a district associate judge at the Jasper County Courthouse. About a year before she completed her doctorate, Clements decided she wanted to open her own practice in Newton.

“I liked it here. Then it worked out that we bought the building and renting out the space on the other side,” Clements said. “The location for the building is perfect. It is just right around the corner from the courthouse, which is ideal. I really like Newton.”

The building has been a project on its own, Clements said. She and her husband have completely remodeled the first level and are currently working on two apartments located upstairs.

“This building was a wreck when we got it,” Clements said. “We’re hoping to clean up the apartments upstairs and rent them in a couple months.”

While progress has moved quickly, Clements said everybody in Newton has been very accommodating during the move and remodel.

“Everybody has been super welcoming, so that is really nice,” Clements said.
