Newton freshmen power past visiting Marshalltown

Antonio Usry forced a fumble, made two interceptions and was credited with nine tackles in Friday night’s Newton High freshman football victory. Usry returned one of the interceptions 31 yards to put his team up 28-0.

Newton defeated visiting Marshalltown 42-12 in front of NHS homecoming crowd. Ursy also had 30 yards rushing on five carries.

“We had another amazing night producing 410 yards rushing and the defense was flying all over the field causing turnovers,” Newton freshman head coach Trent Powers ssaid. “Antonio’s interception return was awesome. Logan Cummins was outstanding in the backfield with another solid performance.”

Cummins ran for 189 yards on 15 carries, scoirng a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Dylan Farver had a TD run as he had two carries for 68 yards.

William Cheng gained 22 yards on two carries. He scored a touchdown, a 2-point conversion run and kicked two extra points. Canaan Terpstra scored a TD and rushed for 30 yards on five carries.

Destin Schroder had 48 yards on five carries. Jarrett Antle rushed for 32 yards on four carries.

Defensively, Zane Kohlmeyer made five tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble. Dalton Altemeier recovered a fumble and had three tackles.

Cheng had four tackles. Julian Hotchkin, Schroder and Chayton Lambertus-Hamm each had three tackles.

Powers said Newton (4-0) will be tested against Fort Dodge (4-1). The Cardinals play at 5 p.m. Friday at Fort Dodge.
