Legion riders honor veterans

I would like to introduce the residents of Newton and Jasper County to the Newton Legion Riders. We are not a motorcycle club, but rather members of the Newton and Monroe American Legions that like to ride motorcycles.

Our main purpose is to honor veterans. We have only been organized close to four years. We have approximately 60 members and would love to have more. This past spring we donated two scholarships to seniors in high school. We have participated in Memorial Day ceremonies the last two years.

We held our first annual poker run in July — it was a huge success. We help out at the Legion when requested and on the spur of the moment lots of the time. We help the American Legion out on Thunder Nites as well. We do flag lines for deceased veterans (in all types of weather) and this is one of our greatest privileges.

My main purpose for introducing us is that there have been several veterans that have passed away in the last few months and we have not had the privilege to provide a flag line for them. As we have talked to all the funeral homes in Newton and Jasper County, we thought maybe we should let the public know we are available to honor their loved one during a difficult time.

All you have to do is mention at the funeral home that you would like to have a flag line and they will pass it on to us. There is no cost for us to do this. Again, it is an honor and a privilege we take very seriously.
