Newton boys golf team takes 8th in Marshalltown’s Joe August Invitational

MARSHALLTOWN — Newton High’s Cardinals couldn’t match host Marshalltown’s score. None of the teams in the 2016 Joe August Invitational could as the Bobcats set a new school record with a 279 to win their home tournament Friday.

“It is the best I have seen as a head coach here at Newton,” Cardinal head coach Pat Riley said of Marshalltown’s total. “We finished eighth out of 11 teams in a tournament loaded with top teams in the state.”

Des Moines Roosevelt finished second with a 292 and Ottumwa was third with a 296. Indianola took fourth with a 304 followed by Southeast Polk at 218, Mason City at 319, and Ames at 321. Newton’s eighth-place score was 343.

Marshalltown’s Nate Vance shot a 7-under par 63 to win the individual medalist spot, and was followed by teammate Cole Davis with a 65 at Elmwood Country Club.

Newton was led by Austin Reynolds with a 78. Paul Maharry was Newton’s No. 2 golfer for the day with an 84. Trey Vanderlaan carded an 89 and Shaiden Simmon shot a 92.

Colin McAnally finished with a 98 for Newton. Sam Supino came in with a 100.

The Marshalltown tournament finished up Newton’s regular season action for the fall. The Cardinals prepare for a Class 4A district meet on Oct. 4 at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.
