Aveda products now available at Aleya

For the first time in Newton, Aveda hair products are available at Aleya Salon & Suites and Nicole Burdess and Brooke Swihart of NBBS salon are excited to share the new products with their clients.

Aveda is a Minnesota-based company which specializes in natural and organic products ranging from skin care to hair care. It also runs several institutes including the Aveda Institute in Des Moines.

“I love Aveda,” Swihart said. “I have a passion for everything about them. It is amazing that we get to use Aveda here in town.”

Currently, NBBS is able to offer retail and color products exclusively through Aveda.

“What makes Aveda so amazing is all of the color is customizable,” Swihart said. “We actually create the formula for it and customize it for each individual. Typcially, you are not going to get the exact same color that someone else has because the formula will probably be a little bit different.”

Swihart is an Aveda Institute graduate in cosmetology. She worked for Aveda for two years before moving back to Newton to be closer to family.

“I have been in the industry for 11 years,” Burdess said. “I have always worked in town, pretty independently. I had the opportunity to work for an Aveda salon while I was going to school as a guest coordinator.”

The duo has the opportunity to use Aveda after Aleya Salon & Suites owner JoAnne Kunkel was presented with the chance to carry the retail line.

“We are pretty excited about that because we’re the first to market in Newton,” Burdess said. “I think that is huge to our community to bring something new to town. It is exciting because I know a lot of people travel out of town to get products.”

Burdess said the aromas is what sets Aveda apart. Aveda carries specific products for specific needs that are all plant-based.

“I like that it is customizable for each person, it is unique, and I think that is what sets it apart,” Burdess said. “The whole plant based product world is really booming right now, a lot of people are seeking it. To be able to offer such a big name in our town, I’m so excited about it.”

NBBS has only had the product for less than a month but they are already seeing a boom in requests. “We are only a couple of weeks in, and I think it has already been pretty crazy because people are pretty excited about it,” Burdess said.
