Suspect eludes officers in high-speed chase

Vehicle located after plowing through bean field

A high speed chase through Newton Thursday night ended with the driver eluding officers by driving into a bean field.

An investigation is ongoing after the vehicle, a black Nissan Pathfinder, was located Friday morning in the 6000 block of North 27th Avenue East.

At approximately 6:50 p.m. officers with the Newton Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a registration violation. The vehicle was at the intersection of First Avenue and East 14th Street when the officer began pursuit with his lights on.

The driver attempted to elude the officer by speeding and ignoring stop signs in northeast Newton, according to police. The driver then headed north on Highway T12, eventually entering a bean field near East 60th Street and North 27th Avenue.

Substantial damage was done to the crops after the driver drove all over the field. The officers lost sight of the vehicle after refusing to pursue through the field.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and charges are pending.
