Geraldine “Gerry” May Rietveld, 83, died Sept. 12, 2016, in Des Moines. She was born Nov. 16, 1932, in Chariton, to Jacob and Margaret (VandeLune) VanDerLeest. She moved from Newton in 1963. Gerry worked for Dr. Leo A. Rogers, orthodontist, from 1963 to 1991, and retired from the office of Dr. John D. Meschke, orthodontist, having worked there from 1988 to 2001.

Gerry was a member and deacon of New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Rachel Circle, deacon at the former Northminster Presbyterian Church, volunteered at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and was in the Friends in Action caregiver program.

On Aug. 18, 1952, she married Robert “Bob” Gene Rietveld in Prairie City. He died Feb. 2, 2014.

Gerry is survived by daughter, Ann Collins and husband Mark of Shawnee, Kan.; son-in-law, Randy Miller of Hutchinson, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Van VanDerLeest; and daughter, Brenda Miller.

A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 19 at Elliott Chapel, with Pastor Tom Robson officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kan. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.
