Homecoming candidates hope to ‘Save the Day’

Parade is Sept. 22, football opponent is Marshalltown

Twenty Newton High School students were briefed Wednesday morning on homecoming procedures and events scheduled for the week ahead.

Afterward, all 20 Cardinals seemed in good spirits — perhaps because they had just found out they are NHS 2016-17 homecoming king and queen candidates.

The candidates’ names were read during NHS’s regular morning announcements, and the court assembled for brief photos. The announcement of the vote tally was made in advance of NHS’s homecoming activities, which are scheduled to take place next week.

The top five queen and king candidates are slated to be announced Monday at 9:45 a.m.

The building of the homecoming parade floats will take place Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The overall theme for NHS this year, with super heroes in mind, is “NHS Saves the Day.”

Monday’s theme is “American Monday,” encouraging wearing of red, white and blue. “Toss it Back Tuesday” calls for clothing from the 70s, 80s or 90s. “Partner-in-crime Villain Twin Wednesday” calls for fashion experiments.

Thursday’s theme, with coronation in mind, is “Dress to Impress.” Friday’s “Show Your School Colors” theme calls for seniors to wear red, juniors to wear white, sophomores to wear black and freshmen to wear gray.

The coronation assembly is set for 11:15 a.m. Thursday, in the NHS upper gym. A reception for candidates and their parents is set to take place in multipurpose room after the assembly.

The parade and a pep assembly are also set for Thursday. The parade will begin at the main entrance to NHS at 6 p.m.

The grand marshal of the parade is longtime Newton Schools faculty member Jill Gearhart, who retiered at the end of the 2015-16 school year.

The route will follow East Third Street South and turn left on North Second Avenue East, wrapping around the courthouse square and ending at the corner of First Street South and South Second Avenue. A short pep rally will take place after the parade on the west side of the courthouse square.

Another event slated for Thursday evening is a dodgeball tournament. That’s scheduled for 7:15 p.m. in the NHS upper gym.

NHS will be on an assembly schedule again on Friday. Another pep assembly — this one in the upper gym — is set for 11:23 a.m. The homecoming football game, against Marshalltown, is set for about 7:30 p.m. at H.A. Linn Stadium.

The Homecoming dance is from 8:45 p.m. to 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the upper gym.
