No. 16 Iowa, ISU to battle for Cy-Hawk trophy

Iowa State (0-1) at No. 16 Iowa (1-0), 6:42 p.m. (BTN)

Line: Iowa by 15

Series Record: Iowa leads 41-22.

What’s at stake

Bragging rights for an entire year in a state without a major pro sports team but a ton of passion for the Hawkeyes and Cyclones. Iowa will look to beat Iowa State for the sixth time in its last nine meetings, while first-year Cyclones coach Matt Campbell could notch his first signature win.

Key Matchup

Iowa cornerback Desmond King vs. Iowa State wide receiver Allen Lazard: Miami (Ohio) barely threw King’s way last week in a 45-21 loss. But the Cyclones have a special talent in Lazard, so look for the Hawkeyes to break with convention and get the reigning Thorpe Award winner matched up with Lazard as often as they can. Lazard had 129 yards receiving and a touchdown in last week’s 25-20 loss to Northern Iowa.

Players to Watch

Iowa: Linebacker Josey Jewell. He was ejected for targeting last week, so it’ll be interesting to see if Jewell is a bit cautious in his return. That’s unlikely though, given that Jewell’s fiery play drives Iowa’s defense.

Iowa State: Running back Mike Warren. He led all freshmen nationally in rushing yards in 2015, but Warren had only 30 last week. Even though the Cyclones line figures to have a tough time with Iowa’s front seven, expect the Cyclones to try to get Warren going in the first half.
