Newton boys open 4A golf season

OTTUMWA — Taking to the golf course for the first time this fall in Class 4A competition, Newton High’s boys finished fifth in Tuesday’s Ottumwa Invitational.

The Cardinals finished in the middle of a nine-team field with a team total of 356. Waukee claimed the team title with a 302 and host Ottumwa was second. Des Moines Roosevelt shot a 323 for third, and Indianola took fourth with a 325.

“We did not play great, but it was our first meet of the fall. We will go back to work and improve on some things I saw today,” Newton head coach Pat Riley said.

Senior Trey Vanderlaan turned in the lowest score of the day for Newton with an 81. Paul Maharry and Austin Reynolds, both seniors, shot an 85 and an 87, respectively. Sophomore Colin McAnally had the final scoring number, 103, for the Cardinals.

Junior Nate Vanzee finished with 104 and senior Sam Supino carded a 105.

“We will shoot better next week in Marshalltown, I have no doubt,” Riley said. “We had to get those first meet jitters out of the way.”

Newton plays at 10 a.m. in the Marshalltown Invitational Sept. 16. at Elmwood Country Club.
