Mustangs use ground game to dispatch ranked Braves

MONTEZUMA — The Mustangs bounced back from a Week 1 loss in a big way.

Sophomore Wes Cummings rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns, while senior quarterback Sheldon Speers threw for 125 yards and rushed for 89 more in a 34-12 win at Badger-Gabriel Stadium on Friday night.

PCM led 13-0 at halftime. Cummings scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and then Speers scrambled 15 yards for a score in the second quarter.

After Montezuma scored to get within seven, PCM got another rushing touchdown from Cummings, this time a 5-yarder.

The Class A No. 9 Braves (1-1) fumbled the ball away on their next possession, PCM (1-1) took advantage. The Mustangs made it 27-6 following a 50-yard run by Cummings.

The Mustang starters did not play in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Preston Van Wyk finalized the PCM scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run.

PCM out-gained Montezuma 429-207 in the win. Montezuma’s standout running back, Carson Losure, was held to just 44 yards on 17 carries. PCM rushed for 304 yards in the win.

Luke Greiner finished with five catches for 53 yards, while Noah Clark had two catches for 45 yards. Cummings had one catch for 27 yards.

Defensively, Isaac Telfer had 9.5 tackles to lead the way. Cummings had 5.5 tackles, Clayton Welch had five tackles and three tackles for loss, Ivan Young had an interception and Jarron Trausch recorded five tackles and recovered a fumble.

Montezuma’s touchdowns were scored on the ground by Logan Price and Brayden Arendt.

PCM hosts Albia (0-2) for the Class 2A District 6 opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Blue Demons lost 63-0 to Pella Christian in Week 2. Albia has been outscored 104-0 in the first two weeks of the season.
