Time for a change at Berg

During a recent tour of the B.C. Berg School complex, we had the opportunity to descend into the bowels of this building, housing the ancient boiler system, outdated wiring boxes, and rundown mechanical areas. It was an eye-opener.

Maintenance Superintendent Jack Suttek reviewed the many problems involved and assured us that some extremely expensive updating absolutely must be done. He emphasized the problems which he also covered so well with his letter to the Newton Daily News.

Jack was straight-on and without fluff or sophistry which can sometimes creep in to a presentation. His in-depth analysis weighed very heavily on my somewhat conservative outlook of this whole situation.

Our four boys attended Berg School, and there are so many memories. I served as institutional representatives when we formed the first Boy Scout Troop and have been a mentor to countless young students during my retirement years. So, as I walk those halls my love for the soul and surroundings continues. Demolishing this building tugs at my heart strings. But, even an “old timer” like me can and perhaps should change his mind.

Jack Suttek compared our existing building with an old automobile, which may still be running, even looking good on the interior and exterior. But, when the motor is worn out, the gears and drive train are shot, and a complete overhaul is necessary, perhaps it is time to face facts.

Yes, I love this old school. But, I really believe it’s time for a change.
