Cardinals blank Trojans; Area prep football roundup

High school football Week No. 2 is in the books for the five area teams. Newton and Lynnville-Sully improved 2-0 while Prairie City-Monroe nails down its first win. Colfax-Mingo and Collins-Maxwell/Baxter dropped to 0-2.

Newton 63, Waterloo East 0

Scoring came from all three phases — offense, defense and special teams — for Newton High’s Cardinals in a 63-0 thrashing of visiting Waterloo East’s Trojans Friday.

Newton’s offense scored three times in the first quarter and had a scoring pass play early in the second period. Newton’s four scoring drives were from 28 yards, 42 yards, 29 yards and 28 yards out.

“We knew they struggled with their punting and we took advantage of that,” Newton head coach Ed Ergenbright said of the short distances for drives by the Cardinals. “We were able to get out quickly on Waterloo East, which is what we wanted. You can’t allow a team with athletes to hang around.”

The Trojans had trouble holding onto the football all night. They put it on the ground in their own end zone and Newton’s defensive nose guard Caleb Kite recovered the ball for a touchdown. Next, it was a blocked punt by Grayson Graham, which was scooped up for a quick score by Blayden Rhone.

“I’m so excited. It was my first touchdown,” Rhone said after the game. “We were just going for the block and Grayson made the block. I was there to scoop and score. We’re (Newton’s defense) the swarm.”

At halftime, the Cardinals held a 42-0 lead. Jaron Roush put a special-team’s score on the board when he returned the second-half kickoff 79 yards in 12 seconds. Roush had scored on a 29-yard pass from Garrett Sturtz and a 3-yard run in the first quarter.

Logan Zibert scored his first touchdowns for Newton back-to-back in a 2-minute span late in the third quarter. Zibert finished with 56 yards on six carries. Roush had 43 yards on five carries.

Sturtz went 4-of-4 passing for 67 yards and two touchdowns. He tossed an 18-yard scoring strike to Trevor Ergenbright in the second period. Josh Miller scored on a 1-yard run in first quarter.

“We were playing together and executed well tonight,” Sturtz said of the Cardinal offense.

Zach Combs kicked seven extra-points for Newton. Roush scored a 2-point conversion after his TD run in the first quarter.

Newton was able to rotate in players throughout the game. Coach Ergenbright said it was great to get everybody playing time.

Waterloo East finished with 135 yards rushing and no yards in the passing game. Andrew Mora had108 yards rushing and 75 of it came on the final play of the game. Mora broke loose and almost scored.

Newton (2-0) plays at Des Moines North next Friday.

Newton’s freshmen moved to 2-0 on the season with a 26-18 win Friday. The Cardinals trailed 18-16 midway through the fourth quarter. A TD run by Dylan Farver and 2-point conversion run by Logan Cummings put Newton in the lead. Newton’s defense scored a 2-point safety for the final margin.

Class A No. 8 Lynnville-Sully 20, BGM 12

BROOKLYN — Lynnville-Sully’s defense stopped host BGM on a fourth-and-inches play late in the fourth quarter to seal a 20-12 victory. The two South Iowa Cedar League foes faced off in a non-district game Friday and played to a scoreless tie in the first half.

The Hawks broke the deadlock with a 4-yard touchdown run by quarterback Elijah Collins at the 8:18 mark of the third quarter. Collins hooked up with Corey MoCoy on a 16-yard scoring strike four minutes later.

BGM’s Bears scored in the fourth quarter, but the Hawks responded with a scoring drive capped by a 1-yard plunge by Gage Vander Leest. Brevin Hansen kicked three extra points for the Hawks in the game.

“BGM made a game of it scoring with less than two minutes left and recovering an onside kick,” Lynnville-Sully head coach Mike Parkinson said. “Our defense made the play we needed to win the game at the end. BGM was in our territory when we stopped them.”

Parkinson said the Hawks’ offensive and defensive linemen owned the line of scrimmage all night. He said his team played sound defense and the offense did a good job of doing what the team needed to do to win.

Sage Zylstra led the rushing attack for the Hawks with 98 yards on 19 carries. Evan Squires had 83 yards on 16 carries. Collins was 5-of-13 passing for 60 yards after taking over for Tyler Van Zante at quarterback. Six different receivers caught a pass for Lynnville-Sully.

Ryan Hofer was credited with nine tackles for the Hawks. McCoy had six tackles and one quarterback sack.

The Hawks are 2-0 and play at North Mahaska next Friday.

North Polk 22, CMB 20

ALLEMAN — The Raiders were denied a come-from-behind win when the Comet defense sacked CMB senior quarterback Hunter McWhirter on the final play of the game at Comet Field on Friday night.

The Raiders (0-2) trailed 15-6 at halftime but rallied in the second half behind a big rushing night from senior Blake Coughenour. Tucker Maxwell also scored two receiving touchdowns in the game, while Jason Hillgren led the defense 7.5 tackles.

CMB senior Caleb Van Zante brought down Chase Russell shy of the first-down marker on fourth and two at midfield to give the Raiders one last chance to win the game.

The Raiders started at their own 46-yard line with 1:31 to play. Two pass completions from McWhirter to Maxwell and Brady Kemp gave CMB a pair of first downs, and then another 11-yard pass to Kemp got the Raiders inside the 20-yard line.

The next two plays went as incompletions and then Maxwell gained 6 yards on third down but couldn't get out of bounds.

A false start penalty pushed the Raiders back even further and then North Polk blitzed on fourth down and sacked McWhirter on the final play.

Coughenour finished with 168 rushing yards and one touchdown and also had 44 receiving yards on three catches.

Maxwell led the receivers with four catches, 61 yards and two scores.

Maxwell's first TD came on a 19-yard pass from junior Braydon Aker in the first half. Aker finished 4-for-8 for 70 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while McWhirter was 10-of-14 for 80 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

McWhirter missed last week's game with an injury suffered during baseball season. He played one defensive possession at linebacker in the first half against North Polk (1-1) before playing every snap at quarterback in the second half.

The Raider defense held Russell to 57 yards on 20 carries, but Anthony Capaldo threw for 175 yards and one touchdown.

CMB had more total yards (307 to 261) and more first downs (22 to 9), but three turnovers were too much to overcome.

PCM 34, Montezuma 12

MONTEZUMA — The Mustangs bounced back from a Week 1 loss in a big way.

Sophomore Wes Cummings rushed for 138 yards and three touchdowns, while senior quarterback Sheldon Speers threw for 125 yards and rushed for 89 more in the win at Badger-Gabriel Stadium on Friday night.

PCM led 13-0 at halftime. Cummings scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and then Speers scrambled 15 yards for a score in the second quarter.

After Montezuma scored to get within seven, PCM got another rushing touchdown from Cummings, this time a 5-yarder.

The Class A No. 9 Braves (1-1) fumbled the ball away on their next possession, PCM (1-1) took advantage. The Mustangs made it 27-6 following a 50-yard run by Cummings.

The Mustang starters did not play in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Preston Van Wyk finalized the PCM scoring with a 7-yard touchdown run.

PCM out-gained Montezuma 429-207 in the win. Montezuma's standout running back, Carson Losure, was held to just 46 yards on 17 carries. PCM rushed for 304 yards in the win.

Luke Greiner finished with five catches for 53 yards, while Noah Clark had two catches for 45 yards.

Defensively, Isaac Telfer had 9.5 tackles to lead the way. Cummings had 5.5 tackles, Clayton Welch had three tackles for loss, Ivan Young had an interception and Jarron Trausch recovered a fumble.
