MAXWELL — Trent Stahl helped Nevada avenge a 2015 loss to Collins-Maxwell/Baxter with four touchdown runs during a Cubs’ 27-14 win over the Raiders on Friday night.
CMB senior Blake Coughenour rushed for 98 yards and two touchdowns, but the Cubs never trailed after Stahl scored twice in the second quarter to give Nevada a 14-8 lead.
Coughenour’s 2-yard run in the first quarter put the Raiders on the board first. He added a 9-yard run to tie the game in the third.
Stahl pushed the advantage back to Nevada (1-0) though. He put the finishing touches on the win when he scampered 25 yards in the fourth to put the Cubs up by two scores.
Stahl finished with 94 yards on 19 carries in the win. The Cubs rushed for 169 yards in all, while senior quarterback Macade Matuska threw for 72 yards.
Coughenour finished with 98 rushing yards and two scores on 25 carries to lead the Raider offense.
CMB, which did not have the services of starting quarterback Hunter McWhirter, got three catches for 63 yards from Tucker Maxwell, three catches for 30 yards from Travis Lindemoen and two catches for 21 yards from Zach Schafer.
Coughenour’s lone catch went for 16 yards.
In his first varsity start, junior Braydon Aker was 10-for-26 for 132 yards and an interception.
Senior Ben Gunderson led the defense with 7.5 tackles, while senior Caleb Van Zante had 6.5 tackles. Senior Archer McFadden had five tackles and one sack.
The Raiders look to find the win column at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Heart of Iowa Conference rival North Polk in Alleman. The Comets defeated CMB 24-7 in district play last year. This year’s game is a non-district contest.
