Louise Mills, 93, of Baxter, passed away Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, at Accura Healthcare Center in Baxter. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ on Main Street in Baxter. The family invites you to join them for lunch and fellowship in the church basement’s Fellowship Hall after the funeral service.

Louise Jane Mills was born to Emerson and Vera (Carter) Morgan on a Marion County farm Nov. 11, 1922. She attended schools in Jasper County, graduating from Newton High School in 1940. She earned her teaching certificate at Central College in Pella, and taught in Jasper County rural schools until she married Lawrence Mills Jan. 18, 1945. They farmed together until moving into Baxter in 1967. Louise worked for Hessons’ Baxter Locker and Akins Brothers Plumbing & Heating in Baxter.

Louise was an active member of the Ira Methodist Church and the Baxter Congregational United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for many years and enjoyed attending the Ladies’ Coffee Club. She also supported the Ira Grange, Baxter Senior Citizens, Baxter Public Library and the Marriage Encounter Organization. Louise was passionate about participating in her county and state fairs. She enjoyed educating others about crocheting and her numerous collections of things like lunch boxes, nativity scenes and baskets. Louise was always concerned about the welfare of mankind and all the animals of the world. She loved her country and prayed for peace often.

Louise was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence “Mickey” Mills in 2008; and by her brothers and sister, Hollis Morgan, Raymond Morgan and Shirley Peters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children Sue (Steve) Cochran of Canon City, Colo., Gale Mills of LaJunta, Colo., Dale Mills of Baxter and Charlotte (Chuck) Page of Mansfield, Ohio. She is also survived by six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
