NPD warns of a potential scam

The Newton Police Department has received numerous complaints of scam callers targeting local residents and claiming to be affiliated with the U.S. Department of Treasury.

The caller, who reportedly used the name Kevin Mason on a few occasions, urges the resident to call a number, often with area code 646, to resolve a situation with the U.S. Department of Treasury or risk enforcement actions such as appearing before a magistrate or grand jury for federal offenses. This is a scam, and residents are advised not to engage with the caller, give personal information over the phone or send money.

To report a scam by callers claiming to be from the U.S. Department of Treasury, email OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov with the date and time the call was received, the phone number of the caller, the geographic location and time zone where you received the call and a description of the communication.
