DES MOINES — Jeffrey King, of Newton, won first place and statewide barbecue sauce bragging rights in the Mine Is The Best BBQ Sauce competition, judged Friday, at the 2016 Iowa State Fair.
Russell Place, of Norwalk, earned second place and Jacqueline Riekena of West Des Moines claimed third place.
Judges also awarded Honorable Mention to Matt Sinovic, of Des Moines.
Entries were judged on appearance, taste and originality.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 203 divisions, 809 classes and over 9,925 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
