NCSD board has light agenda

District communication to be addressed

One of the lightest agendas in recent memory has been released for Monday’s Newton Community School District regular Board of Education meeting.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the EJH Beard Administration Center.

Superintendent Bob Callaghan will give a report about a board retreat and a regular report about open enrollment statistics, along with some reminders about back-to-school events. He will also address direction regarding district communication.

A report from the bond committee will be given by the three NCSD board members who serve on the committee: Josh Cantu, Andy Elbert and Travis Padget. The committee is helping inform the public about issues related to the Sept. 13 election for a bond to rebuild Berg Middle School.

A handful of other housekeeping items, such as approval of bills and the business service report, round out the agenda. There is always a sign-up sheet for the public forum at NCSD board meetings.

Monday is not only back-to-school night for most campuses, it’s also the day of the EJH Beard open house. Anyone who wants to see the remodel of the former Hy-Vee West grocery store, can tour the administration and alternative school facility between noon and 7 p.m. Monday.

Newton students begin the 2016-17 school year Tuesday and Wednesday with early-release days, followed by full days Thursday and Friday.

The board could have several public work sessions coming up. There is one already scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the EJH Beard Administration Center.

The bond committee is hosting three open-house forum and tour events at Berg Middle School for anyone who wants to see the school facility in detail before the Sept. 13 election. Those open houses are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. on both Aug. 30 and Sept. 1 and at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

The board’s next regular meeting is set for Sept. 12.
