DES MOINES — The call of the wild rang out from Pioneer Hall during the bird calling contests held at the 2016 Iowa State Fair.
Contestants did their best imitations of chickens, roosters, ducks and turkeys.
Sheryl Eilert Beals, of Colfax, tied for second with Brenda Freeman, of Ames, in the Ladies Chicken Calling competition. Bonnie Swedwell Eilert, of Newton, received third place.
In the Turkey Calling Ages 17 and Over, Jessica Fryer, of Prairie City, took the top prizes in the category.
The contest was part of “Rural Americana Olde Tyme Competitions” in Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall. A first prize of $5 and ribbons were awarded to each class.
