Newton Daily News to host series of events Aug. 15-19

To thank its loyal readers for their commitment to local issues and knowledge of current events, the Newton Daily News will host a series of Reader Appreciation Week events Aug. 15-19.

The Newton Daily News was founded in 1902 at its current location, and as technology has rapidly changed over time, so has the way people read the paper.

Today, the Newton Daily News print edition reaches more than 7,000 people each day.

Its website, www.newtondailynews.com, has an average of 325,000 pageviews per month. More than half of the Newton Daily News pageviews come from a mobile devices.

More than 8,470 people “like” the Newton Daily News on Facebook, which is one growing way to reach its readers. More than 1,500 people follow Newton Daily News and Newton Daily News Sports on Twitter.

Parent company, Shaw News, has also expanded its central Iowa reach with the acquisition of The Jasper County Tribune and Prairie City News in 2013.

“All of us here at Newton Daily News appreciate our loyal readers, and we want to express that appreciation. We hope that our readers of all ages will join us next week for our Readers Appreciation Week events,” publisher Dan Goetz said.

The community is invited to join in the following free events next week:

Monday, Aug. 15

The series of events kickoff with Refreshments with Reporters from 8 to 10 a.m. Monday at the Hy-Vee Market Cafe in Newton. Local residents and readers are invited to join members of the Newton Daily News editorial staff for an open house of coffee and conversation.

Tuesday, Aug. 16

The newspaper staff will host a Reader Read-In from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Newton Public Library. A read-in is a social gathering for readers. Those who come may bring in their own reading material or browse through library favorites including books, magazines and newspapers. One attendee will win a Kindle.

Wednesday, Aug. 17

To help readers adapt or transition to their online subscription access, Newton Daily News staff will be available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the circulation office to help answer any questions about service or setup.

Thursday, Aug. 18

The Newton Daily News will host its Reader Appreciation Lunch beginning at noon Thursday at Sersland Park, located next to the newspaper.

Enjoy a free lunch including hot dogs, potato chips, lemonade, water and Stacy’s Sweetstuff cotton candy.

Friday, Aug. 19

The newspaper will host a free community movie showing of “All the President’s Men” at 1 p.m. Friday at the Capitol II Theatre in Newton.

“All the President’s Men” (1976) is an American political thriller about the The Washington Post investigation of the Watergate scandal starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman as journalists Bob Woodward and Clark Bernstein.

A 16 ounce pop and 32 ounce popcorn will be available for $3.
